Do school systems really care about kids? What are your thoughts?

On September 13, 2009 I read the following article in the AJC.  http://www.ajc.com/news/gwinnett/gwinnett-schools-suing-over-136047.html.

I knew that this legal action would occur.  The districts have threatened to overturn the law long before the Governor signed it into law.  I searched through the article trying to understand both sides of the story.

Disclosure…, I have had interactions with all sides named in the suit, including the plaintiff.  I am biased against the plaintiff.  I do not understand the plaintiff’s arguments.  Maybe someone representing the plaintiff or someone that sides with the plaintiff can articulate their position for me.

A summary of the article indicates that Gwinnett County Schools and one other districts does not like the idea of a Charter School Commission that is able to authorize charter schools without the local district approval.  The district believes that this commission is illegal; even if it creates a school that outperforms their local schools. (As with the case with Ivy Prep)

As a parent, I am outraged that this district believes they have the right to control parent’s tax money. It is my money not theirs!!  My child education is valuable.  I would like my child to be able to go to a charter and for it be fully funded with my tax dollars if I choose.  The district disagrees….they would rather keep control of my tax dollars to add to their bottom line. (That how I read the article)

As a parent, I am disturbed that a local districts with a budget of over $1BILLION is spending my tax money fighting a very successful school, that is designed to gives girls an outstanding education.

If Gwinnet is successful in their suit they could overturn the lawsuit that authorizes independent charter schools.  Education is the key to any thriving society. How can an entity like Gwinnett County School take away our rights to educate our children, because of their own selfish interest?

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from someone who disagrees with me?
